Valentine's Day Wreath Craft

The diameter of the completed wreath is about 15 inches. This craft is fun for older children (and adults!) - Age 6+. There are quite a few steps that younger kids (Age 2+) can help with, but they won't be able to do the craft independently. This is a good family project!

Materials:
Wire coat hanger
14 to 16 tp rolls
OPTIONAL: Valentine's color paint like pink, purple or red; red, pink and/or white construction paper (you could also use craft foam or white paper painted or colored tape
glue
scissors

Instructions: ADULT: Take each tp roll and cut a slit HALFWAY through

OPTIONAL: Paint tp rolls a valentine's day color. You can see from the finished craft that not much shows through, but my kids have fun painting, so we painted them all shades of pink and purple.

Let dry.

ADULT: Bend the coat hanger to form a circle

Using the slits cut halfway through the rolls, slide each of your tp rolls onto the hanger to form a big circle of tp rolls.

OPTIONAL: Take a bit of masking or scotch tape and tape the tp rolls together. (tape the openings of the tp rolls on the inside of the circle together). This will keep the rolls from spinning around while you're working. If you chose not to do this, the paper hearts will keep everything from spinning on the finished craft

Cut out many, many heart shapes. Show children how to fold construction paper in half to make a symmetrical heart.

One person can be doing this part while another is assembling the tp roll wreath base. This works well if you have crafters of different ages (the base is more difficult than cutting out hearts).

We made sets of fancy hearts by gluing hearts inside each other -- a large heart, medium heart, small heart and very small heart of varying colors were stacked and glued. Then we scattered around some small single hearts to fill in gaps. Tie a bow on the top if you want to.

Chocolate Kiss Mouse Valentine Craft
Two Chocolate kisses make these sweet little Valentine mice.
kissmousefrnt.jpeg - 978 Bytes kissmouse.jpeg - 1027 Bytes

Materials
Two wrapped chocolate kisses
2x2 squares of construction paper, fun foam, or felt
Thread
Wiggle eyes
very small pom-pom
craft glue

Cut a 1-2 inch tall heart from the paper or fun foam..
Place it between the two kisses ( bottom to bottom) and secure them with glue. This is the mouse body and the heart makes the ears. Remove one of the paper tags to make room for the face. Then use your craft glue to attach wiggle eyes, thread whiskers and a pom-pom nose. The other paper tag is the tail.
TIP:
Using paper will speed up drying time and makes
for easier heart cutting.

Pencil Mice Heart Valentines
Valerie Rush from Michigan thought her kids got enough
candy at their school Valentine's Day parties, but she still wanted to give a special Valentine party favor. That's when she started making pencil mice with her kids. "They've given them to class mates for two years and the kids still love making them. "

Materials
Heavy construction paper
Pipe cleaners
Decorated Pencils
Hole punch
Black Marker or Pen

From red, pink or purple paper, cut out several hearts approximately 4 inches across. On each, draw a nose and eyes. Punch four holes above the mouse's nose. Thread a short length of pipe cleaner through the top two holes and another through the bottom two.
Lastly, slip a pencil down behind the whiskers, from the backside of the heart.

Puzzle Heart Valentine
Share a piece of your heart with this clever homemade Valentine. A perfect use for old puzzles. A great project idea for classrooms and scout troops!
hartpzl.jpeg - 2606 Bytes
Materials
Puzzle pieces
Red spray paint
Poster board or cardstock paper
Newspaper
Glue

Place old jigsaw puzzle pieces, excluding the straight-edged border pieces, on newspaper and spray-paint them red, pink or purple (brush-applied paint will also work). Let the pieces dry thoroughly before gluing them into a heart shape.
It easier to glue the pieces onto white poster board cut into a heart shape. This provides a guideline to follow and makes the heart shape more durable. Glue the puzzle pieces randomly.
Stack a few pieces for texture.
Options:
Small hearts can be made into lapel pins by attaching a pin backing with hot-glue...or you can add a ribbon for hanging
on the wall or door or turn your heart into a magnet with self-sticking magnetic strip (craft store).

If you have extra puzzle pieces make a puzzle pin (below).

Puzzle Piece Pin
A unique way to say "I love you!"

Materials
Jigsaw puzzle pieces
spray paint or acrylic paint
(red, purple, pink)
Paint brush
Craft Glue or glue gun
Pin Backing -craft store
Newspaper

Lay the puzzle pieces on some newspaper before painting. Spray paint according to the instructions on the can ( Mom or Dad's job!). If you are only making a few, you can hand paint the pieces with acrylic craft paint. Then use a paint pen or a very fine brush to write your message. Let the pieces dry.
I chose to seal my pins with clear spray on acrylic,
but it is not necessary. Then using craft glue or a glue gun, attach your pin back to the back of the puzzle piece.
Option:
Use a self sticking magnetic tape to make a
refrigerator magnet instead!
