Here are some things you can do to help save these habitats and the animals that depend on them: |
RAINFORESTS ... Avoid buying products made from rainforest hardwoods like mahogany and rosewood. Logging of these hardwoods contributes to the destruction of the forest. Rainforest products that can be harvested year after year are finding application in everything from cosmetics to ice cream. Buy products, such as Brazil nuts, that make use of the rainforest without destroying it. |
| Wetlands provide many benefits, including food and habitat for fish and wildlife; flood protection; shoreline erosion control; natural products for human use; water quality improvement; and opportunities for recreation, education, and research. | ![]() |
MARSHES AND WETLANDS ... Oppose the draining and filling of wetlands in crucial coastal areas that provide a safeguard for water quality and protect inland areas from storms. Work with local authorities to make sure they include wetlands protection in their land-use decisions. |

COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS ... Phosphates are chemical compounds, found in detergents, that cause "algae blooms" that use up oxygen needed by other organisms in estuaries. Use phosphate-free detergents. Offshore drilling degrades wildlife habitat and leads to oil spills that put our coastline in jeopardy. Support one of the groups in your area that works to protect coastal resources. |
| Living coral reefs are the foundation of marine life, and thus a crucial support for human life, yet all over the world they are dead or dying because people are destroying them. Already 10 percent are lost, and scientists say 70 percent of all corals on the planet will be destroyed in 20 to 40 years unless people stop doing what they're doing: pollution, sewage, erosion, cyanide fishing, clumsy tourism and get serious about saving the coral reefs now.TD> | ![]() Click here or on the picture to learn more how to save our coral reefs |
CORAL REEFS ... Overdevelopment along coastlines causes pollution that jeopardizes coral reefs. Support limits on coastal growth and strict pollution control. Support responsible diving practices, which allow people to enjoy the amazing beauty of coral reefs without harming them. |
| Dolphins and Humpback Whales need your help. Friends of the Ocean, in conjunction with Earth Island Institute, offer Dolphin & Whale Sponsorship programs which offer a way for you to get involved in learning about and saving the lives of dolphins and whales around the world. | ![]() ![]() |
DOLPHINS ... Purchase only those brands of tuna marked "dolphin safe" on the can. This indicates the tuna has been caught by methods that don't harm dolphins. Urge your elected officials to support international enforcement of laws that protect dolphins. |

When abroad, don't buy "tortoise shell" or turtle-skin merchandise. Though protected in parts of the U.S., the sea turtle's habitat continues to be threatened by development. ![]() As the 20th century draws to a close, Environmental Defense has prepared charts which vividly demonstrate what the coming millennium may have in store for Earth, unless greenhouse-gas pollution is brought under control. These projections are based on findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and other peer-reviewed literature. While thousand-year projections are speculative, they are suggestive of the far-reaching effects that decisions made today could have on our planet's future. |
